Stiftelsen Norsk Mat is an independent foundation working to increase diversity, quality, and value creation in Norwegian food production. We manage three official labeling schemes that provide consumers with confidence and insight into the origin and quality of their food: Nyt Norge, Protected Designation, and Specialty Label.

Trøndelag is one of Norway’s true food treasure chests, and the region with the highest number of products granted Protected Designation status. In close collaboration with local producers and food actors, we’re now working to elevate and preserve Trøndelag’s rich culinary heritage through this scheme. Products like Festsodd from Trøndelag, Skjenning, Tjukkmjølk from Røros, Skjørost from the Røros area, Fjellmandel from Oppdal, and Sauna-smoked meat, Namdalen style have all passed the strict criteria required to be granted Protected Designation - offering them the same legal protection as Parma ham or Gorgonzola within the EU.

These producers play a key role in preserving Trøndelag’s vibrant food culture and traditions. The region also boasts many products under the Specialty Label, which highlights exceptional local food, and Nyt Norge, Norway’s official origin label. You’ll find them all at Trøndelag Food Festival—and some even at the Bryggerifestivalen (Brewery Festival)!
